ANNETTE SANGER

Annette completed a B.A. in music from Dartington College of Arts in Devon, England, before going on to do a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology and Ethnomusicology under John Blacking at the Queen's University of Belfast. She conducted extensive fieldwork in Bali, Indonesia, concentrating on the role the arts played in village life. She studied gamelan and dance with many teachers, most notably with the great composer and performer I Wayan Sinti.

Annette lectured full-time at the Queen's University of Belfast from 1984 to the end of 1989, during which span she had three children, completed her doctoral dissertation (1986), wrote many articles, organized conferences, traveled, researched, and leapt tall buildings in a single bound (all without the benefit of maternity leave). She left Belfast to join her husband James Kippen in Toronto.

From 1990 to 2000 Annette ran the University Settlement Music School in downtown Toronto, expanding its range of offerings and raising its profile to include a variety of programs in non-Western musics. She has maintained a connection to the Balinese gamelan by teaching the Faculty of Music's Gamelan Semar Pegulingan ensemble at the University of Toronto. She also teaches part-time at the University of Toronto 's Scarborough College (UTSC) where she offers a variety of ethnomusicology courses. Annette is also a member of Gamelan Gong Sabrang, a Javanese gamelan group that plays at the Indonesian Consulate in Toronto.
