Devon, England, before going on to do a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology
and Ethnomusicology under John Blacking at the Queen's University
of Belfast. She conducted extensive fieldwork in Bali, Indonesia,

completed her doctoral dissertation (1986), wrote many articles,
organized conferences, traveled, researched, and leapt tall buildings
in a single bound (all without the benefit of maternity leave).
She left Belfast to join her husband James Kippen in Toronto.

in downtown Toronto, expanding its range of offerings and raising

the Faculty of Music's Gamelan Semar Pegulingan ensemble at the
University of Toronto. She also teaches part-time at the University
of Toronto 's Scarborough College (UTSC) where she offers a variety
of ethnomusicology courses. Annette is also a member of Gamelan
Gong Sabrang, a Javanese gamelan group that plays at the Indonesian
