Amarnath Misra was associated
with the Sankatmochan Hanuman Temple in Benares, and was a knowledgeable
and majestic drummer of the Kudau Singh tradition. In 1948, along
with Kishan Maharaj and Asutosh Bhattacharya, he was responsible
for creating the Shri Sankatmochan Sangeet Mahotsava, a well-known
Benares music festival. Among his many students are Shrikant Misra,
Manik Munde and Phil Hollenbeck. In this excerpt from the opening
moments of a dhrupad composition on bin in chautal,
Amarnath Misra plays a long, introductory mohra.
