Ayodhya Prasad's grandfather was
the younger brother of the great Kudau Singh (c. 1815–1910),
and thus Ayodhya Prasad was an important figure in the silsila of
that pakhavaj tradition. That said, his playing style
was somewhat different from others of the Kudau Singh silsila,
and he often de-emphasized the inherent rhythmic drama of the style
in favour of parans and relas, like those in
the trital (16 counts) clip offered here, featuring extensive
internal repetition. A long rela pattern in which there
is extensive repetition of constituent elements is known more commonly
as paral (or parar).
Ayodhya Prasad received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1967. |
