Mohan Shyam Sharma

1966–; Nathdvara/Kudau Singh tradition

Mohan Shyam Sharma is a wonderful pakhavaj player of the younger generation. He learned from his uncle Tota Ram Sharma of Mathura, who in turn learned from Purushottam Das as well as Ayodhya Prasad. Ed Pias has much more information and an interview with Mohan Shyam on his excellent website, pakhavaj.net. Ed and I spent some time with Mohan Shyam in Washington, DC, in May 2002. The clip I offer here is from an interview I recorded. I requested a certain style of paran beginning "dha ki ta dha ki ta dha dha ki ta kira dha ki ta...", as there are many of these in the repertoire. Mohan Shyam recites and plays one: his sound is gorgeous, and his bols are beautifully balanced and musical. This is a great piece.
