Prem Vallabh is remembered both
as a tabla player who learned from Ahmedjan Thirakwa and
as pakhavaj player of the Kudau Singh tradition. He was
originally from Mathura: according to Aban Mistry, he was from
an unbroken line of pakhavajis (referred to as the Kodhia
gharana of Mathura) that stretches back to one Khodiaji
who lived around 1700. Prem Vallabh was employed as a tabla player
at All India Radio, New Delhi, and he was frequently chosen to
accompany India's stalwarts in the weekly National Programme radio
broadcasts. His energy and clarity shine through in this chautal excerpt. |
