For centuries,
the pakhavaj (or mrdang) was the dominant drum
in Hindustani music. Now it is in decline because dhrupad and
the cultural milieu in which it thrived have largely disappeared
from the mainstream, or are supported by special festivals rather
than on the concert stage. The following pages offer information
on the pakhavaj's history,
some of its great players, and selections from its repertoire.
