Hirendra
Kumar Ganguly, known more familiarly as Hiru Babu,
was also a prominent disciple of Abid Hussain Khan from 1919
to 1936. A barrister, he told me he was once responsible for
the liquidation of the Bank of China. He always adamantly maintained
his amateur status, never accepting money for his art. He was
a knowledgeable and generous teacher whose students and their
students in turn are even now fervently devoted to him. One of
his students, Santosh Krishna Biswas, was the teacher of the
excellent Swapan Chaudhuri. I had the privilege of spending time
with Hiru Babu in 1981, doing an interview and generally chatting
with him about tabla. He kindly granted me a rare opportunity
of both hearing and recording his playing. This is an excerpt.
He announces and plays a tricky "dhene gene" rela for
which one needs superb technique: a technique he had not lost
despite his age of about 76. |
