Inam Ali Khan was the son of Gameh
Khan (1883-1958) and the maternal nephew of Natthu Khan (1875-1940;
he became khalifa of
the Delhi tradition on the death of his father. He was also the
teacher of Latif Ahmed Khan (1942-89) and Faiyaz Khan (1934-).
He is known to us primarily through Robert Gottlieb's 1977 study
of tabla gharanas: he had a clear, clean sound and an intricate
knowledge of methods for varying rhythmic themes, as he shows in
this Gottlieb recording from 1971 (though not the one that appears
with Gottlieb's book). I met with and interviewed him and his paternal
uncle Munnu Khan (?1900-90?) several times in 1984, and even recorded
a little of Inam Ali's playing (although, owing to ill-health,
he had effectively stopped performing). I hope one day to publish
those interviews. |
