Another
of the great Pakistani tabla players introduced to me
by Lowell Lybarger was Karim Bakhsh Pairna of the Qasur silsila.
He learned from Nabi Bakhsh Kalarewala, who in turn learned from
the great Miyan Fateh Din Qasuri. Karim Bakhsh Pairna taught
Baba Murid, who in turn taught the astonishing Bashir Hussain
"Goga" (see above). Indeed, there is a very close
similarity in the playing of Pairna and Goga, much more than
in, say, the playing of Qader Bakhsh and his students Allarakha
Khan or Shaukat Hussain Khan. Karim Bakhsh Pairna was a master
technician with quick, restless fingers and a richly musical
approach to the drums. Here, in this fabulous nau-tal-ki-savari (29
counts – sam comes on the `D in the G m `D phrase
of the accompanying Hamir naghma) he plays a rela in tisra
jati (triplets) interrupted by a long gat-tukra in misra
jati (sevens). It's truly breathtaking!
