Kishan Maharaj

1923-; Benares tradition

Kishan Maharaj is now one of the grand old masters of Hindustani tabla, and a widely respected figure. Known for the beautiful architecture of his solos, and for a vast knowledge of Benarasi compositions, he continues to teach and exert an influence over many members of the current tabla generation. In this unusual clip from a recent live concert (I'm indebted to Vincent Goudard for the audio) Kishan Maharaj recites, then demonstrates a tabla bol realization of a Ganesh paran. I discuss this paran, notate and explain its words, in an article called Some Thoughts on a Famous Ganesh Paran.
