Madan Mohan Upadhyaya worked for a time at AIR Lucknow, although not during the years I was living in the city. I know little about him, although he hails from a pakhavaj tradition from Gaya in Bihar. His playing is a wonderful blend of Benarasi traditions (there is more than one stylistic silsila there), and could generally be described as purab baj ("Eastern playing style"). His sound is powerful, his knowledge extensive, and his rhythmic momentum entirely compelling. Though not widely known, Madan Mohan deserves recognition.
