Mahapurush Misra

1932-87; Benares tradition

Mahapurush Misra was a student of Anokhe Lal Misra, and he was famous as an accompanist. He spent time in America during the late 1960s teaching, recording, and appearing widely in concerts. There are far too few of his tabla solos in circulation, however, especially since these were invariably spectacular displays of virtuosity and musicality. This short audio clip (as well as the still photo at left) comes from a film recorded in 1967. It features a Benarasi chand (or bant) and its rela followed by a dhirakit rela and a short concluding tukra.
