Nayan Ghosh

1956-; Lucknow tradition

Nayan Ghosh is the son of Nikhil Ghosh, and is one of the most extraordinary talents imaginable. Not only does he play tabla to an astonishingly high standard, but he is equally accomplished as a sitar player. Moreover, he is notorious for rarely ever practising! This shows an exceptional level of talent to which few can aspire. He was trained by his father, but also by Ahmedjan Thirakwa, who often stayed with the Ghosh family in Bombay in his later years. Nayan is in possession of an enviable storehouse of traditional tabla knowledge, and what's more, he is very keen to present that knowledge as it used to be played with its original technique and fingerings. (Many others have modified these pieces to make them easier to play at high speeds.) Here, Nayan presents four tukras in tintal, all with recitation.

SRA's website once featured a video of a superb tabla solo demonstration of beautiful, rare gats played by this outstanding musician. Although that seems no longer to be available online through SRA's "Concert Hall", there is a short clip of some gats attributed to Miyan Bakhshu Khan of Lucknow on YouTube.
