Nizamuddin
Khan was another of Afaq Hussain's favourite players:
knowledgeable and technically accomplished in the purab style,
his playing suffered in later years because of his opium addiction
and ill-health. A few years before he died he recorded an archival
treasure for India Archive Music (sadly, without lahra accompaniment
– an editorial decision I didn't agree with!) for which I wrote
liner notes. It is full of wonderful old compositions, and is
strongly recommended for the tabla connoisseur. Click
here for
details. In the following clip from a much earlier tintal solo,
Nizamuddin plays a chal with its rela, then
launches into a famous Farukhabad qaida.
