Pawan
Kumar died in a road accident in 2001. He was a fabulous player
of the Punjab gharana.
In this recording made by Lowell Lybarger in 1999 he plays one
of my favourite gats, a char-darje-ki-gat composed
by Nabi Bakhsh Khan. It is a single gat played in four
different lays. Before embarking on the piece he turns
the gat into two separate tukras. His playing
is full of charm and character, and totally without pretension.
