Qader Bakhsh II

1902-60; Punjab tradition

Known mostly to the tabla world as a teacher of Allarakha Khan, Miyan Qader Bakhsh II was the charismatic doyen of the Punjab gharana. He learned from Miyan Faqir Bakhsh. Towards the end of his life he became a highly eccentric faqir (renunciate). After his death the khalifa-ship of the Punjab gharana passed to his nephew Khalifa Akhtar Hussain (1947-2001). Qader Bakhsh was primarily a pakhavaj player, and that shows through in his style and technique in this clip. In ektal, Qader Bakhsh plays a tihai uthan followed by a Punjabi qaida.
