A
marvelous player from a non-hereditary background, Sheik Dawood
(1916-92) was a widely respected musician who developed a repertoire
spanning many different traditions and styles. He was born in
Sholapur, Maharashtra, and he learned from several different
sources, among them Alladiya Khan of Hyderabad and Mehboob Khan
Mirajkar, a disciple of the great Jahangir Khan. There
is a fitting tribute to
Sheik Dawood from his disciple Betrabet Prabhakar Rao, containing
more details of his life. In this clip, from an AIR jhaptal solo,
Sheik Dawood plays a tukra, then a rela in
three stages, and finally a chakradar.
