Wajid
Hussain Khan was the khalifa of the Lucknow tabla
gharana, and he was first and foremost a soloist who relished
exceedingly difficult stroke combinations and dazzling speed of
articulation. This excerpt is from a solo in jhaptal (10
counts), probably from AIR Lucknow and dating from the 1960s. It
is a gat-qaida replete with variations. He begins at a
fast pace, and the bols are extremely difficult to play.
He then doubles it: the clarity and power are astonishing.
